Meet Elva :)

Hi there! I am a UX/Product Designer, just graduated from the Master of HCI program at CMU. Previously, I studied Psychology and Philosophy, and continued to apply critical thinking and human research skills in my design process. I worked at EdTech startups, which prompted me to pursue mission-driven, user-centered design.

To me, design is about finding the right problem to solve, making intentional design decisions as well as educated guess, and working with the constraints to build an ideal future.

If you are interested in my work, I am always happy to chat!

More about me...

It is hard to describe my work style and personality in a simple way. Rather, I have multiple alter egos and they work with each other.

The Thinker

The Thinker consumes information holistically and see if she can draw logical connections. She is not always everyone's favorite, because she continuously ask:
"What is the real problem here?"
"Are we doing the right thing?"
"Does this solution make sense?"

But you gotta admit, some of her questions are pretty spot on! She also doodles and mind-maps a lot to do a  mind dump.

The Explorer

The Explorer is inquisitive and meticulous in nature and charmed by human behavior. She loves to conduct research, synthesize the finding, and propose whimsical ideas. Whenever possible, she would base a design decision on user research. BTW, she's relentless when recruiting!

However, there are times when the Thinker says to her: "You are not gonna get all the data, try to make educated guesses"

The Optimizer

Although the Optimizer is as much a perfectionist as the others, she has other onuses. She knows that if everything is done by the book perfectly, we are never going to get enough work done. At times, she has to make hard decisions on how to work with limited time and resources.

Although sometimes she could be a buzzkill, people are somehow okay with it -- after all, she brings everyone baked good!

My Thought Processes

I love to use the old-fashioned pen and paper to draw out my ideas and clear out my mind. I only use fountain pen and permanent markers because I want myself to really think things through and be responsible for what I purpose.
